Protecting Yourself and Those Around You During Flu Season

You already know to stock up on food and household supplies, keep your house and work space clean, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and get face masks for you and your family if you have flu symptoms. But, there is another thing you should consider…

You may have heard of “Thieves Oil”, but if not, here is the background story:

In the 15th century, the plague ravaged communities in Europe, causing widespread infection and thousands of deaths. As a result, many people died from various social backgrounds, the poor and the rich, were both at risk of catching the plague and perishing from its symptoms.

However, this didn’t stop poor people from robbing the graves of the rich people that died from the plague. However, grave robbers mostly avoided infection with the epidemic, even though they were handling infected bodies that still harbored the disease.

By coating their bodies in thieves oil, the grave robbers managed to protect themselves from infection, due to the potent antimicrobial properties that enhance immune system efficiency, strengthening the immune response. It was for this reason that the oil gained its moniker of “thieves” oil.

“Thieves Massage Oil" may Enhance Immune Health

The five active ingredients in this oil all have individual healing properties, as well as anti-microbial properties with many benefits for use in the modern world.

It's a blend made with Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus Radiata, Rosemary and Lemon essential oils.

Cinnamon: Made from the bark, leaves, or twigs of several species of cinnamon tree

Clove: Made from the undeveloped buds of the flowers found on the Eugenia caryophyllata species of clove tree

Eucalyptus: Obtained from the leaves of Eucalyptus plants, which are native to Australia

Lemon: Extracted from the rinds of the lemon fruit, Citrus limon

Rosemary: Derived from the herb rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis

“Thieves Massage Oil" may Reduces the Effects of a Fever

When we get sick with the flu, our brain signals for the production of pyrogens to induce a fever – When pyrogen proteins bind to nerve endings, they force the body to raise its temperature set point. As the internal temperature rises, it provides a hostile environment for the growth and spread of bacteria and viruses, flushing them out of the body.

Doctors are mostly hesitant to break a fever unless it reaches a critical point where the elevated temperature may start causing neurological damage to the brain. However, thieves oil contains lemon extract oil, which helps to reduce fever symptoms and keep the internal temperature from getting too severe to warrant the use of medications to bring the patient’s temperature back to baseline.

Studies show that eucalyptus oil and its terpenes, 1,8-cineole, contains antimicrobial properties that increase immune health and stop the infection before it has the chance to create a fever in patients suffering from a cold.

With the change of seasons in the air, the start of the spring flu season begins in the Northern hemisphere. Staphylococcus pneumoniae, aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae are dangerous bacteria that cause bacterial infection of the airways, leading to diseases like bronchitis and pneumonia.

These respiratory illnesses can have lasting implications on an individual’s respiratory health. Coming down with a case of pneumonia can be fatal if the patient does not receive the treatment they need to clear the infection before it causes a collapsed lung.

Studies show that the use of clove and eucalyptus oil can assist the body in warding off bacterial and viral infection by boosting the immune system. Similarly, the compounds also have benefits for treating the initial symptoms of respiratory disease. Diffusing with thieves oil allows you to inhale medicated steam containing these potent polyphenols which go to work in killing off the invading bacterial infection.

“Thieves Massage Oil" has Anti-inflammatory Properties

Inflammation is responsible for almost every adverse health condition in human beings. Inflammation of the nervous system leads to cognitive issues with thinking and mental energy, while inflammation of the digestive system causes a drop in immune function. Doing all we can to limit the effects of inflammation on the body ensures that we live our lives in a state of optimal health at all times.

Using thieves oil can dramatically reduce symptoms of inflammation – the oil gets its anti-inflammatory properties from the eucalyptus and clove oil extract found in the formula. Studies by Japanese researchers found eucalyptus oil reduces the presence of COX-2, an enzyme that’s responsible for the development of inflammation in the body. Studies into rosemary essential oil also show promise as an anti-inflammatory compound.

Diffusing with thieves oil allows the potent polyphenol compounds in the oil to enter the bloodstream through the airways, reducing systemic inflammation in the body.
